Assam: ULFA to be officially disbanded today

Chetia said that after the disbandment, the ULFA leaders and cadres will have different identities

The United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) will be officially disbanded today.

The group will be disbanded at a special general meeting to be held at Somuapara in Darrang district. This was informed by ULFA general secretary Anup Chetia.

Speaking to the media, Chetia said, “ Today we are organizing the last general meeting of ULFA, where our members will come from all over Assam. In the meeting the outfit will be officially disbanded. We will hand over the letter of our disbandment to the Chief Minister of Assam.”

Adding further Chetia said that there are around 900 ULFA cadres in camps acros Assam.

He also said that after the disbandment, the ULFA leaders and cadres will have different identities.

Chetia added that he will personally be involved in social work.

“Our cadre strength is close to 900 and we will continue staying in Assam. We will all have other identities. Personally I will be engaged in social work and will try to serve the people of the state,” Chetia said.
Chetia further informed that the ULFA leadership is also considering about the various employment opportunities for the cadres.
Meanwhile, senior ULFA leader Pranjit Saikia said that if the ULFA cadres are asked to leave the camps, then they will be left without a shelter. Hence, he requested the state government that the cadres should be allowed to live in the camps.
It may be mentioned that ULFA had signed a signed a historic tripartite peace agreement with the Centre and the Government of Assam in New Delhi in the presence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Union Home Secretary Ajay Bhalla, Assam DGP GP Singh and other senior officials on December 29, 2023.
ULFA was formed on April 7, 1979, at the Rang Ghar in Sibsagar to establish a “sovereign socialist Assam” through an armed struggle. Later the outfit split and the pro-talk faction began discussions with Centre in 2011.
