Assam: One forest official killed, 3 injured in an elephant attack in Mariani

Man-elephant conflict continues to create havoc in Assam. In the latest attack, one forest official was killed and another three were seriously injured in an elephant attack on Thursday night in Mariani in Assam’s Jorhat district.

The incident happened when Mariani Forest Department personnel went to drive away the elephants in Vijay Nagar area of Titabar in the district.

However, a herd of elephants, who seemed to have lost their way, attacked the forest personnel.
The colleagues of the deceased forest official have alleged that the incident took place because the guns that forest personnel were carrying was not working.

The deceased forest official has been identified as Atul Kalita. The injured officials have been identified as Rajiv Borgohain, Parag Dutta, and Girin Mahatu, and they are currently undergoing treatment at Jorhat Medical College Hospital (JMCH).

For the past few days, a herd of wild elephants that had come out of the Gibbon Sanctuary in Mariani, Assam, in search of food has been wreaking havoc in the area.
