Assam flood situation worsens; 1 dead, 4.95 lakh in 22 districts affected in last 24 hrs

The flood situation in Assam has further worsened in the last 24 hours. One person died and there has been a significant jump in the number of people affected by the deluge from 1,19,830 on Wednesday to 4,95,799 today.

The number of affected districts too has gone up from 20 to 22. The crop area destroyed in the last 24 hours stands at 14,091.90 hectares, up from 10,591.85 hectares a day ago.

Among the affected, 63,674 are children.

Around 14, 035 displaced people including 2,268 children and 90 lactating or pregnant women are taking shelter in the 162 relief camps, the Assam State Disaster Management Authority’s report released today said.

At least five rivers – Beki at Road Bridge, Manas at Nh Road Crossing, Pagladiya at Nt Road Crossing, Puthimari at Nh Road Crossing and the Brahmaputra at Dhubri and Neematighat are flowing above the danger mark.

The worst affected districts are – Bajali, Baksa, Barpeta, Biswanath, Bongaigaon, Chirang, Darrang, Dhemaji, Dhubri, Dibrugarh, Golaghat, Hojai, Kamrup, Kokrajhar, Lakhimpur, Majuli, Nagaon, Nalbari, Sonitpur, Tamulpur, Jorhat and Kamrup (M).

The total number of animal and livestock affected stands at 3,46,639.
