Despite the relaxed rules, liquor shops and bars will not be allowed to operate beyond current hours
The Assam government has approved round-the-clock operation for shops and establishments in key municipal areas, promising a major boost to trade, jobs, and the overall economy.
But before you celebrate, there are important conditions every business owner and worker must know. Who gets to stay open all night? What are the new labour rules? And why are some establishments left out?
Assam Cabinet Approves 24/7 Trade. Here’s What You Need to Know
Under the new policy, businesses in Guwahati, Dibrugarh, and Silchar municipal areas can now operate 24/7. Shops along state highways and in municipal areas can stay open till 2:00 AM, while those in districts and minor roads outside municipal corporation limits must shut by 11:00 PM.
What About Worker Rights?
To ensure workers’ rights are protected, strict labour laws remain in place. No adult worker can be on duty for more than 48 hours a week or 9 hours a day.
Employers must provide a half-hour break after 5 hours of continuous work, and any extra hours will be considered overtime, with a cap of 125 overtime hours in 3 months.
Will Liquor Shops in Assam Also Stay Open 24/7?
Despite the relaxed rules, liquor shops and bars will not be allowed to operate beyond current hours. The government has drawn a clear line, ensuring that only essential and general businesses reap the benefits of 24/7 trade.
This move is expected to boost employment, improve nightlife, and align Assam with global business trends. However, whether it will be a game-changer for the economy depends on how businesses and consumers adapt to the change.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma took to X and wrote, “Now shops can operate 24*7 in Guwahati, Dibrugarh and Silchar and with extended timings in other areas without compromising on worker rights and conveniences! P.S- This decision is not applicable for liquor shops and bars.”
