All Bodo Students Union ups ante demanding removal of Bodoland Univ VC Laishram Ladu Singh

The ABSU has sought Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma's intervention in the matter

The All Bodo Students Union (ABSU) has upped its ante seeking removal of Prof. Laishram Ladu Singh as the Vice Chancellor of the Bodoland University who is an accused in a corruption case.

During their protest in front of the Bodoland University main gate, the ABSU activists burned an effigy of Prof Laishram Ladu Singh.

The protestors also burned effigies of members of the inquiry committee set up by the Governor of Assam. The protestors also sought Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s intervention in the matter.

Speaking to newspersons, one of the ABSU members said, “We have been demanding removal of Prof. Laishram Ladu Singh because he is involved in financial irregularities. He is doing things according to his whims and fancies, so we had requested Assam CM for his removal. The CM Vigilance had issued an arrest warrant last year itself, but he is a free man by taking anticipatory bail. Members of the Inquiry Committee set up by the Governor had come here to probe the matter, but unfortunately they have filed a report stating that Ladu Singh is not guilty. We condemn this in strongest terms.”

BTR Chief Pramod Boro commenting on the matter said, “A CM Vigilance case is already being registered against him (Prof Ladu Singh) and probe in underway. The Chief Minister, Governor are aware of the protests that have been going on. I hope that this case will be resolved soon because Bodoland University is one of the premier learning institutes in the state. So everyone including the Chief Minister wants it to progress.”

Earlier this year, a team of Special Vigilance Cell of the Chief Minister had arrested Ladu Singh for his involvement in the corruption cases. The vigilance cell had reportedly taken away as many as nine official files from the office chamber of Singh for investigation. However, Singh could obtain anticipatory bail very shortly after the arrest and has been performing official work of the University despite being arrested.

A case of embezzlement of money from the University was registered against the Vice Chancellor on May 2022.

This has irked the different pressure groups in the Bodo heartland who are now seeking removal of Laishram Ladu Singh at the earliest.
