The chief warden of the NERIST reported to the police and filed a missing person report at around 9.30pm when the student could not be found in the hostel
Aniket Dutta Gupta, a 19-year-old computer science engineering student at NERIST in Itanagar, Arunachal Pradesh, who had gone missing from the campus on May 24, is said to have allegedly jumped from the Bogibeel Bridge in Dibrugarh, Assam.
The police said that they have recovered a suicide note from the spot in the name of Aniket Dutta Gupta.
They have also recovered some items including a laptop and mobile phone from the spot from where the boy suspected to be Aniket, had leaped into the river.
According to police, the student took a lift in a car going towards Arunachal Pradesh from Sukapha Tiniali in Dibrugarh at around 7.30 a.m on Friday.
Suddenly, in the middle of the Bogibeel Bridge, he stopped the car, saying that he had a vomiting tendency. As the car stopped, the person came out of the car and jumped into the river.
Aniket, a native of Assam’s Digboi town in Tinsukia district, reportedly walked out of the examination hall after the invigilator caught him with a note in his pocket, suspecting him of indulging in unfair practice. Aniket denied that he cheated, claiming that the note had been in his pocket unintentionally.
The incident occurred at around 10:30 a.m. inside the examination hall. Aniket left the hall and went straight to the hostel.
The chief warden of the NERIST filed a missing person’s report at around 9.30 pm when the student could not be found in the hostel.
During the investigation, it came to light that the student had withdrawn Rs 5,000 from his account from the NERIST gate ATM booth. His phone was found switched off.
“The SDRF rescue team is trying to trace the person who we suspect to be Aniket Dutta Gupta based on a suicide note found at the incident site. A phone and laptop was also found,” ASP Bitul Chetia said.
