Arunachal school’s ex-warden accused of sexually assaulting 21 minors surrenders before POCSO court

Yumken Bagra, who has been accused of sexually assaulting 21 minors at the Government Residential School in Karo, located under Pidi Circle in Shi Yomi district of Arunachal Pradesh, today surrendered before the Pocso court in Itanagar after his bail was cancelled by the Gauhati High Court on July 21.

The accused, Yumken Bagra, appeared before the court personally along with his counsel, Karyom Dabi.
As per the court order, the accused has been sent to judicial custody for 14 days.

The Gauhati High court, earlier took suo moto cognizance of the horrific cases of rape and molestation of 21 boys and girls, all minors, between 2019 and 2022.

“The Jail Authority of July jail shall produce the accused either physically or virtually after expiry of his remand period,” the court order read.

Earlier, on July 21, the Gauhati High Court rejected the bail plea of Yumken Bagra.

The accused had previously been granted bail by a special court in Yupia on February 23 of this year.

Yumken Bagra, a former hostel warden of a government residential school in Arunachal Pradesh, was accused of raping six boarders and molesting 15 male and female boarders. The children were 6 to 14 years old.

The matter came to light when an FIR was lodged in November 2022 by the father of two girl children, stating that his daughters were sexually assaulted by the warden. The Monigong police registered the case and transferred it to the SIT of the vigilance department.

The accused was arrested after the two FIRs were lodged at the Tato Police Station in the Shi Yomi District in November 2022. But a Yupia court had granted bail to Bagra.

The SIT investigation found that there were six cases of rape, nine cases of molestation, and six cases of sexual harassment. The case was then handed over to the Special Investigation Team (SIT), led by SP Rohit Rajbir Singh.
