Arunachal Pradesh: IAF Airdrops Rice and Essentials in Flood-Hit Kurung Kumey

First Published: 28th July, 2024 19:19 IST

Deputy Commissioner Vishaka Yadav assured that every effort is being made to ensure villagers have access to essential supplies

In a significant relief operation, the Indian Air Force (IAF) and civil aviation choppers have been deployed by the district administration to airdrop rice and essential supplies in the remote villages of Kurung Kumey district, Arunachal Pradesh.

This initiative comes after flash floods and landslides struck the district a month ago, causing severe damage and isolation of several areas.

As per reports, Deputy Commissioner Vishaka Yadav assured that every effort is being made to ensure villagers have access to essential supplies.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Pema Khandu, addressing the Arunachal Pradesh assembly, highlighted that 33 roads and 13 bridges were washed away in the past month due to incessant rains and flash floods. Telecommunications, water, and power supplies have been restored in most parts, but a major damage to the 11 KV line near Kurung bridge has delayed power restoration in Parsi Parlo and parts of Damin circles.

Reportedly, a bailey bridge over the Kurung River is expected to be completed by August 7 to improve surface transportation. The state government has allocated ₹17.26 crores to the Public Works Department for road restoration.

As many as 20 villages from Damin, Parsi Parlo and Panyasang administrative circles under Kurung Kumey district in Arunachal Pradesh has been cut off from the rest of the state since July 8, following incessant rain that triggered major flash floods and landslides.

The crisis has affected over 5000 residents from 20 villages mainly in the Damin, Parsi Parlo, and Panyasang circles.

Reportedly, the crisis occurred mainly after a 52-metre-long concrete bridge over the Kurung River was completely washed away due to the heavy rains and flash floods, isolating these communities and raising concerns over severe shortages of food, vegetables, medicines, and fuel.

As relief efforts continue, the district administration remains committed to restoring normalcy in the region and ensuring the well-being of the affected residents.
