The All India Democratic Women’s Association (AIDWA)’s Tripura unit on Saturday voiced their concerns regarding the escalating rate of crime against women as part of a nationwide protest.

The protest, a manifestation of their collective discontent, commenced at Agartala city center, as the protesters raised slogans with banners and flags against the government as they went through the streets of the capital’s streets before concluding in the Orient Chowmhuni area.

The demonstrators, driven by a shared sense of urgency, raised slogans against the government, asserting that Tripura, in tandem with the rest of the nation, has witnessed a surge in violence against women since 2018.

Swapna Datta, Secretary of AIDWA’s Tripura unit, attributed the rise in such incidents to the lack of proactive measures by the double-engine government in the state.

She further criticized the apparent inaction of the police, contending that their failure to apprehend perpetrators has emboldened them to commit crimes with impunity.

Datta highlighted a disturbing trend where individuals involved in crimes against women roam freely without fear of arrest, fostering an environment conducive to such offenses.

She emphasized that this issue transcends age, affecting college-going girls, aged women, and young girls alike.

Urging immediate governmental intervention, Datta stressed the need for swift and decisive action to curb the distressing incidents of violence against women.

The protest in Agartala was not an isolated event; it mirrored simultaneous demonstrations across all 23 subdivisions of the region on the same day.

This widespread participation underscores the collective demand for urgent and comprehensive measures to ensure the safety and security of women throughout the country.
