Committed to every student’s education and career: Manipur Minister

Dr Ranjan Singh said that the Manipur government is in touch with NMC and the Centre regarding the transfer of displaced medical students to other institutes

Within hours of 29 displaced medical students taking to the streets yesterday alleging that they were barred from sitting for exams despite paying exam fees and completing the exam process, Manipur Health and Family Welfare Minister Dr Ranjan Singh said on Wednesday that the government’s top priority is to provide education to all students including the displaced ones.

Dr. Ranjan Singh emphasized that the government is committed to ensure that students’ education and careers are not compromised.

In response to the displaced medical students’ demand that they be transferred to institutes outside Manipur, the minister said that the Manipur government has been actively engaging with the National Medical Council (NMC).

“There is no separate view for the medical students. The government is giving priority to providing education and not losing the career of the students,” stated Dr Ranjan Singh. The government has sent numerous letters to the NMC, seeking permission for the transfer of Churachandpur Medical College students to other medical colleges.

“All the medical colleges in the state are under NMC, so for every change, we need to seek permission from NMC,” added Dr Ranjan Singh. The government has been in communication with the NMC and the Government of India since July, advocating for the welfare of the students.

“We are waiting for permission from NMC. If granted, further education will be arranged for medical students,” assured Dr Ranjan Singh, highlighting that the government is actively pursuing avenues for the students’ benefit.

In response to the ongoing situation, Dr Ranjan Singh addressed concerns regarding exams, stating, “As far as the exams for the MBBS students in Churachandpur Medical College are concerned, the students managed to have their exam today.” He mentioned receiving a letter from the NMC on November 13, indicating no objection to students’ placement from parent or different colleges, pending the university’s decision.

“The issue involves medical colleges of RIMS, JNIMS, and the Academy of Medical Sciences. All changes must align with the guidelines of the NMC,” clarified Dr Ranjan Singh

The Manipur Government is keen on obtaining the NMC’s approval for the transfer and is working diligently to secure the best possible outcomes for the affected students. Dr. Ranjan concluded, “The government is not neglecting the students. We take all the welfare of the students very carefully.”
