Taking a jibe at Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP government, National Congress leader Rahul Gandhi said
both the Prime Minister and the Centre are more focused on the violence in Israel than on Manipur in Northeast India, which has been burning for more than 5 months now.
Rahul Gandhi is on a 3-day visit to Mizoram to campaign for the party’s candidates for the elections to the 40-member assembly seats in the state scheduled to be held on November 7.
Addressing a public meeting at Raj Bhavan in Aizwal, Rahul Gandhi said that the BJP government has destroyed the idea of Manipur.
“Some months ago, I went to Manipur and I could not believe what I saw. The idea of Manipur has been destroyed by the BJP. It is no longer a state; it is now two states. People have been murdered, women have been molested, babies have been killed, but the Prime Minister doesn’t find it important to travel there. It’s amazing to me that the Prime Minister and the Government of India are so interested in what is happening in Israel, but not interested at all in what is happening in Manipur,” said Rahul Gandhi.
“If you look at our national media, you will find story-after-story-after-story, talk show-after-talk show about what is going on in the Middle East. But nobody in the national media speaks about what is going on in Manipur; nobody is talking about the pain, the misery that has been caused there and I simply cannot understand why the Prime Minister has not visited. It is something to be ashamed of that the leader of our union has not travelled to the state of Manipur after what has happened there. And Manipur is just a symptom of the problem,” he added.
The Congress leader said that what is happening in Manipur is an attack on both the people of the state and on the idea of India in Manipur.
