Thousands of teachers are threatening to commit mass suicide over long delay of their salary payments in Assam. Teachers from 24 districts have threatened to commit suicide which amount to a total of 9,238 individuals.
These are teachers who were appointed between 1991 and 2001, but have not received their salaries for a long time. Protests have erupted in different parts of Assam today as teachers along with their families threaten to commit mass suicides over the non-payment of their salaries.
Police arrived at the spot of protest where the agitating teachers were threatening to commit suicide. The teachers stated before the media that they have been forced to take the extreme step after the state government long ignored their plight.
