NE Express derailment: Mother and 8 year old daughter from Assam among 4 killed

The mother and the daughter who originally hailed from Sadiya in Assam, were travelling from Delhi and were supposed to go to Nepal. The husband and the other daughter survived

A pall of gloom descended at Sapakhowa in Eastern Assam’s Sadiya district following the tragic death of a mother-daughter duo who hailed from here died in the tragic North East Express derailment last night.

Usha Bhandari, 33 years, along with husband Deepak and daughters, just 8, and Aditi were travelling from Delhi to Assam on the Amrit Vihar (Delhi)-Kamakhya (Guwahati) North East Express. While Deepak and Aditi survived the accident and are undergoing treatment at a hospital in Bihar, Usha and Aakriti lost their lives.

Speaking to Northeast Live, Usha’s sister who lives in Sadiya said, “We came to know about the accident at around 10 PM last night. My elder sister Usha, her husband Deepak and their daughters Aditi and Aakriti were on board the train.
My elder sister got married to Deepak in Nepal, but they were staying in Delhi. They were planning to go back to Nepal. They were supposed to come to Sadiya from Nepal during the puja festivities.”

The bodies of Usha and Aakriti are being brought to Sadiya.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma also condoled the demise of the passengers of the derailed Northeast Express. The CMO in a post on ‘X’ said, “#UPDATE: HCM Dr @himantabiswa has expressed his deepest condolences at the passing away of two passengers, Mrs Bhandari and Ms Bhandari from Tinsukia District, travelling on Train 12506 in the unfortunate derailment incident at Buxar last evening.

In another post, the CMO Assam informed, “#UPDATE: One passenger from Assam,travelling on Train 12506 which derailed last evening, is receiving treatment at AIIMS-Patna. Another 42 persons are receiving treatment in Buxar. Chief Minister’s Office is monitoring the situation & is in touch with relevant authorities.”

It was 9:35 PM when a big jolt shook the passengers on board the ill-fated train up. They next heard a loud noise.

Immediately afterwards, 21 bogies of the Express train derailed claiming 4 lives.

Names of the other two deceased are Abu Zaid, 27, and Narendra, 32.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences over the loss of lives in the incident. In a post on ‘X’ he said, “Pained by the loss of lives due to the derailment of a few coaches of the North East Express. Condolences to the bereaved families. I pray for a quick recovery of the injured. Authorities are providing all possible assistance to all those affected: PM @narendramodi.”

Railway minister Ashwini Vaishnaw also conveyed his condolences and assured for a proper probe into the matter. Sharing his thoughts in a social media post, Vaishanaw said, “Deepest condolences for the irreparable loss. Will find the root cause of derailment.”

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has announced an ex gratia of Rs 4 Lakh each to families of the people who died in the accident.
