Meghalaya’s ‘Whistling Village,’ Kongthong, has clinched the Bronze award in the Best Tourism Village category at an event organized by the Ministry of Tourism.

Besides its breathtaking beauty, Kongthong is known for its unique tradition where each villager is assigned a special tune at birth by their mothers, known as ‘Jingrwai Lawbei’ or ‘Mother’s Love Song.’ This tradition reflects the matrilineal culture and a mother’s enduring love for her children.

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma celebrated this achievement on social media and wrote on X, “Meghalaya’s ‘Whistling Village’, Kongthong bags the Best Tourism Village Award in the Bronze category organised by @tourismgoi. Apart from its scenic beauty, Kongthong is unique for its tradition to identify each villager with a unique tune given to them at birth by their mothers called ‘Jingrwai Lawbei’ which translates to ‘Mother’s Love Song’, depicting the beauty of our matrilineal culture and a mother’s unwavering love for her children. My congratulations to Kongthong Village for the award!!”

Kongthong is situated in the East Khasi Hills district, approximately 60 km away from Meghalaya’s capital city, Shillong.

An interesting fact about Meghalaya’s ‘Whistling Village’ is that its residents have two names – a regular name and the song name. The song names come in two versions: a long song and a short song, with the short one typically used at home. With around 700 villagers in Kongthong, there are a remarkable 700 different tunes, making this village truly unique and worth visiting.
