The funds would be used for the construction of farmers' markets in the four villages to provide local farmers a platform to sell their produce
In a move that is expected to help farmers sell their produce properly and earn better, Nagaland Chief Minister, Neiphiu Rio, has approved a grant of Rs 4 lakh each to four villages – Chiechama, Rusoma, Zadima, and Bosta in Kohima. The funds would be used for the construction of farmers’ markets in these villages, to provide local farmers a platform to sell their produce.
Taking to the social media platform X, CM Neiphou Rio expressed his pleasure attending the 1st Jhum Fair-cum-Chiecha Licha organized by Chiechamiapfü Mechü Krotho.
“Attended 1st Jhum Fair-cum-Chiecha Licha organised by Chiechamiapfü Mechü Krotho. A delight to explore Chiechama cuisine which is a gastronomic delight that reflects the flavours, spices & traditions of Nagaland. Let us encourage further promotion of our local produce & cuisine,” wrote CM Rio
Chief Minister Rio assured farmers of the state’s support and emphasized the government’s focus on the development of agriculture and related sectors. He expressed hope that such fairs would continue in the future, offering economic opportunities to farmers.
During the event, CM Rio congratulated the women of Chiechama village for their remarkable efforts in organizing the fair. He commended their initiative in showcasing various agricultural products and sharing the rich Chiecha cuisine, which embodies Nagaland’s unique flavours and traditions.
Rio highlighted the role of Chiecha women in motivating others through their initiatives and hoped that neighbouring villages would follow their example.
The Chief Minister also recognized the promotion of organic farming by these women, emphasizing the health benefits of organic produce. He encouraged everyone to support local products and cuisine.
Rio emphasized Nagaland’s unique identity in terms of food, tradition, and culture. He acknowledged that due to the long-pending Naga political issue, the state lags in the industrial sector, and locally made products labelled as ‘Made in Nagaland’ are not widely commercialised.
Despite these challenges, Rio expressed pride in the growing awareness among Nagas about selling their produce and achieving economic sustainability through various agricultural products. He also celebrated the success of some families in Chiechama village, where they have earned more than Rs one lakh by commercialising their products.
