Mizoram man sentenced to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment under POCSO act

A fast-track court in Mizoram’s Kolasib district sentenced a 61-year-old man to rigorous imprisonment of 20 years and a fine of Rs 10,000 for sexually molesting a minor girl under Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses (POCSO) act.
Additional District and Sessions Judge, Julie Lalrinzami, in a judgement pronounced on Thursday, ordered that the convict, Laldingluaia, a resident of Thingdawl village in Kolasib district, will have to undergo additional 1-month imprisonment in the event of default payment of the fine.
According to the judgment delivered on August 29, Laldingluaia sexually molested a 6-year-old girl on December 23, 2021, and a FIR was submitted at Kolasib Police Station on the same day. Laldingluaia was 59 years old when he committed the heinous crime.
A criminal case under POCSO Act, 2012, was registered at the Kolasib Police Station, and a charge sheet was submitted to the court on March 3, 2022.
The court, after pronouncing the sentence, instructed the Secretary of the Kolasib District Legal Services Authority to make arrangements for awarding compensation to the victim under the Mizoram Victim of Crime Compensation Scheme, 2011.
