Instead of pursuing their careers, youths are forced to serve as village defense volunteers in affected areas of the state due to the ongoing violence

It has been nearly 3-months to Manipur violence. The violence that broke out on May 3 has not only brought untold miseries to the people in Manipur but has also hampered the careers of bright youngsters.

Instead of pursuing their careers, youths are forced to serve as village defense volunteers in affected areas of the state due to the ongoing violence.

One such untold story is of a youth from Maulngat village in Churachandpur who having cleared the SSC-CAPF examinations, could not appear for the Physical Efficiency Test (PET) due to the unrest.

He said there are many others like him guarding villages, and many more educated youths (graduates) who are engaged as village guards.

As the sound of gunshots echoed nearby, the youth, who did not wish to be identified, said that there are many more educated youths like him who are serving as village guards in these times of turmoil as their careers take a backseat.

“I have passed my SSC selection test. But due to this violence, I couldn’t appear for my personal ability test. Like me, most of my friends also couldn’t pass their personal ability test. We are protecting our village and our land,” the youth told Northeast Live.

The village of Mualngat and others in the area were under attack on Saturday. Heavy gunfire was reported the whole night.
