The TMC leader said that it is an embarrassment to the state's community and the state as a whole
Meghalaya TMC president, Charles Pyngrope strongly condemned the Tura violence and pressed for an independent probe into the incident.
The TMC leader said that it is an embarrassment to the state’s community and the state as a whole. Such an incident should have never happened in the first place.
Speaking to media, Pyngrope said, “I condemned the incident that happened in Tura, irrespective of who were the perpetrators of the incident. We can not afford to behave like barbarians and try and harm the Chief Minister. It is a disgrace to our community and the state as a whole. Such a thing should have never occurred in the first place.”
He said that he is unable to understand how the crowd was able to come so close to CM despite being properly protected.
Demanding an independent probe into the incident, the TMC leader said that there is a need for an independent probe as everyone wants to know the truth and who is behind the incident.
Regarding politicising the issue, he said, “Let’s not politicise the matter saying -BJP, TMC, Congress or any other party behind the incident and led the truth to prevail and then the law will take its course.”
Adding that Police have to be more proactive, he said when Police get inputs as to what is happening and what is going to happen, they should act swiftly irrespective of whether it happens or not.
He also said that the Police cannot be blamed for everything because half the time they are also overburdened and understaffed. He said that officers who can handle such situations must be put in place to avoid such incidents in future.
Furthermore, he termed the arrest of the party’s youth leader Richard Mrong Marak as illogical.
He said, “I find it quite surprising that Police picked him up. I feel it is illogical because at the time of the violence, Richard Marak was not even at the incident site.”
It may be mentioned here that on July 24 night, a mob gheraoed Chief Minister Conrad Sangma’s office in Tura, pelted stones and attacked his office while he was inside in a meeting with his cabinet colleague and PHE minister Marcuise N Marak and members of NGOs hearing their demands and grievances in which five police personnel were injured.
Chief Minister Conrad Sangma said that acts of violence would not be tolerated and “the law will be very firm” on any act of violence. He said that there is a line which people should not cross, and this time the line has been crossed.
Meghalaya DGP LR Bishnoi said that the attack was pre-planned and was aimed at causing physical damage to Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, even go to the extent of murdering him.
So far 47 persons including TMC’s youth leader Richard Marak, and two Mahila Morcha leaders of BJP and NPP worker Jeakson Sangma are among those arrested.
