Meghalaya is facing a huge shortage of doctors, particularly specialists, and the state has constituted its own board for recruitment to sort out the delays in calling for applications for various doctors and specialists in the state, Meghalaya health minister Dr. Ampareen Lyngdoh said on Monday.
“The numbers of shortage and deficiency of specialists in the state of Meghalaya is pretty huge, it will run into hundreds. We need gynaecologists, paediatrician, cardio specialists, kidney specialist, nephrologist. We now realised that mental health is a big issue, we need psychiatrist, there’s a short fall of anaesthesia specialist across the state,” Ampareen Lyngdoh said.
“We are hoping that we will be able to address this quickly. One of the steps taken by the state of Meghalaya is that we have constituted our own board for recruitment, which is a competent authority that is going to be sorting out the delays in calling for applications for various doctors and specialist,” Ampareen Lyngdoh added.
Dr Lyngdoh who recently travelled to Garo Hills and inspected various health care facilities there said the state is also sending doctors for short-term courses.
“We are also sending doctors on short-term courses immediately. We need somebody to run an entire maternity ward efficiently. The first batch of doctors that have gone for the short-term certificate programs in various fields like gynaecology, radiology specialist in ultrasound, blood banks, is completing its course now,” Dr Lyngdoh said.
Stating that the Doctors are unwilling to go for specialists course, the health minister said, “It seems like everybody is happy with just a government job, of being a government doctor. This mood has to change, and the change cannot come from the government it Shas to come from the doctors, who will be able to see the change firstly in themselves.”
Dr Lyngdoh also highlighted that there is a need to bring in transfer and postings policies for doctors and nurses adding it is hampering the services rendered by health facilities.
Dr Lyngdoh also pointed out that the state lacks adequate infrastructure.
“Many facilities have inadequate infrastructure, buildings are falling apart, roofs of labour rooms and operation theatres are not safe, so the engineering wing will have to be accorded a bigger sanction if you want us to mend all the dilapidated facilities around as many centres as I have come.” Dr Lyngdoh said.
“I hope that my travelling to these institutions across the state will also take officers across the state,” Dr Lyngdoh added.
