Manipur unrest: 3-member Judicial Commission visits Churachandpur

The 3-member Judicial Commission is constituted by the Centre to probe the violence in the state
The 3-member Judicial Commission headed by former Gauhati High Court Chief Justice Ajai Lamba today for the first time visited violence hit Manipur. With this visit of the Commission, it can be said that a probe into the ongoing law and order situation in the state has officially begun. The Commission will be investigating the consequences that led to the turmoil since May 3.
Other members of the Commission are, Himanshu Shekhar Das, a retired bureaucrat, and Prabhakar Aloka, a former intelligence officer.
After reaching the 36 Bn Assam Rifles camp in violence affected Churachandpur, the Commission members went straight to interact with inmates at 2 different relief camps set up in the Salt Brook School and the St Mary’s Higher Secondary School.
On June 1, during his visit to Manipur, Union Home Minister Amit Shah had announced that a Judicial Commission headed by a retired Chief Justice level Judge would be constituted to probe the incidents of violence. Concluding his 4-day visit to the strife-torn northeastern state, Shah also had mentioned about the formation of a peace committee under Governor Anusuiya Uikey and security advisor Kuldiep Singh and members of civil society.
The Home Minister had stated that six cases related to the violence would be probed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
