Arunachal: Lady Constable files complaint against IPS office for alleged sexual harassment

First Published: 13th July, 2023 12:34 IST

In her complaint, she alleged that on June 23, she received a plethora of WhatsApp messages from the official number of the SP seeking sexual favour

In a shocking incident, an IPS officer has been accused of sexual harassment by a woman police constable who is posted in the crime branch of SP office Bomdila, West Kameng district.

The lady constable lodged a complaint against the accused on June 24 with the internal complaints committee of the district police.

IPS B. Bharat Reddy was the former SP of the West Kameng district. He was recently transferred to Delhi and relieved of the charge of SP, West Kameng district, on July 8 following sexual harassment charges.

In her complaint, she alleged that on June 23, between 11 pm and 12 am, she received a plethora of WhatsApp messages from the official number of the SP seeking sexual favour, including a voice call from the SP.

However, the lady constable didn’t respond to the messages and claimed that the incident had left her deeply traumatized.

The allegation came to light after the District Police, under the chairmanship of DySP (HQ) Radhe Obing, constituted a seven-member internal complaint committee to look into the complaint.

On June 27, the case was transferred to the Local Complaint Committee (LCC) “for further necessary action and the interest of justice to the victim”.

The LCC consists of eight members and is headed by Advocate Kamala Dewan.

The committee has summoned SP B. Bharat Reddy to appear before the committee on the 15th of this month.

The lady constable has now sought strict action against the accused under the relevant sections of the law.
