CM Zoramthanga highlighted the importance of planting saplings to preserve the environment and ensure sustainable survival
Mizoram Chief Minister Zoramthanga on Friday said that development and preservation of environment should go together as far as possible to achieve sustainable development.
Addressing a function at Sihphir near Aizawl on the occasion of the observance of ‘Green Mizoram Day’, CM Zoramthanga highlighted the importance of planting saplings to preserve the environment and ensure sustainable survival.
The Green Mizoram Day was observed across the state. The state government in collaboration with government employees, educational institutions and civil society undertook a massive plantation drive in district headquarters, towns and villages.
Lakhs of sapling have been planted since 1999 when the Green Mizoram Day was launched for the first time.
Governor Dr Hari Babu Kambhampati, along with Lady Governor Dr Jayashree Kambhampati and other dignitaries, marked the occasion by planting mango saplings in the Circular Lawn, Raj Bhavan.
Emphasizing the importance of preserving the state’s lush greenery and rich ecosystem, Kambhampati issued an appeal to the people of Mizoram to actively participate in various green initiatives. He urged everyone to take responsibility for contributing to a better world environment and maintaining the state’s identity as a haven of abundant natural beauty.
He passionately advocated for tree planting as a fundamental measure to protect the environment of Mizoram. He appealed to each citizen to plant at least one tree every year, highlighting the slogan, “Each one plant at least one tree every year to protect the environment of Mizoram.”
Encouraging widespread participation, the Governor highlighted the positive impact such initiatives can have on the overall well-being of the state and its inhabitants.
The government and local organizations also distributed saplings to individuals and communities, encouraging them to plant and nurture trees. Green Mizoram Day serves as a reminder of the responsibility each citizen has towards protecting the environment and ensuring a greener and healthier future for generations to come.
