Mizoram Landowners to Block NH-306 Indefinitely Over Compensation Dispute

First Published: 25th September, 2024 12:22 IST

The issue arose after the Centre announced plans to widen NH-306, along with National Highway-6, into four lanes.

More than 2,000 landowners in Mizoram’s Kolasib district have decided to indefinitely block National Highway-306, following failed talks with the government over compensation for land acquired during highway expansion. The blockade will be staged at Sethawn, reports confirm.

The issue arose after the Centre announced plans to widen NH-306, along with National Highway-6, into four lanes. While land acquisition was completed and compensation was being processed, the state Forest Department declared an 800-meter stretch on both sides of the highway as roadside reserve forest, citing a 1965 notification. This declaration has angered the landowners, who claim it unfairly impacts their compensation.

Despite several meetings between the landowners and the Forest Department, no agreement has been reached, prompting the decision to block the highway in an effort to pressure the government. The affected landowners estimate that between 2,300 to 2,500 people own land along NH-306 and NH-6, between Vairengte on the Mizoram-Assam border and Mualkhang in Kolasib district.

NH-306 and NH-6 are vital routes for Mizoram, connecting the state to the rest of the country via Assam, making the upcoming blockade a major concern for transportation and commerce.
