Three people including one ex-MLA, said to be involved in threatening vendors and shopkeepers at New Checkon (New Lambulane) in Imphal East earlier in the day today were picked up by Manipur police, Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh said while speaking to the media this evening at CM Secretariat.
The trio with guns had earlier in the morning threatened vendors and shopkeepers to vacate the market, following which altercations broke out and fresh tensions also erupted. Police also recovered two license guns from their possession.
Troops have been promptly deployed in New Checkon area and curfew clamped from 1 PM instead of 4 PM.
In another incident last night, 3 persons were injured in a firing incident at Moidangpok area in Imphal West. 2 accused have been arrested after search operations.
The Chief Minister said that peace was returning in Manipur in the last 10 days or so and such incidents could flare up the violence. With Centre’s intervention and public cooperation, Manipur is limping back to normalcy. He sought people’s cooperation in restoring peace and normalcy in the state.
The chief minister regretted the incident of Assam Rifles personnel resorting to lathi charge to disperse Imphal based media persons covering the incident at New Checkon.
He assured that he will talk to security advisor Kuldeep Singh to ensure safety of journalists covering the crisis and that such incidents do not recur.
