Battle lines have been drawn with all major political parties in Mizoram announcing their candidates for the first election to the 11-seat Lunglei Municipal Council scheduled to be held on March 29, 2023.

After Congress named their candidates on Wednesday, Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM), BJP and the ruling Mizo National Front (MNF) released the names of their candidates on Thursday (March 9).

State BJP vice president R Vanramchhuanga announcing the candidates’ list urged the people of Lunglei to vote for BJP to have an efficient and transparent government.

The BJP promised that if the party is elected to power, Union Minister of Housing and Urban Affairs Hardeep Singh Puri will be immediately invited to visit Lunglei to discuss the development plan with the elected councillors.

On the other hand, MNF vice president Lalthlengliana released the candidates’ names of the party during a function at Lungleion Thursday.

Releasing the names, he has expressed confidence in winning the elections. He further stated that the MNF candidates are more effective than those put out by the rival parties.

On the other hand, ZPM working president K Sapdanga announced the names of the party candidates and said his party is optimistic about winning the election as its goal is fighting corruption.

It may be mentioned that earlier announcing the candidates, state Congress president Lalsawta said his party was in favour of decentralization of power and blamed the ruling MNF headed by Chief Minister Zoramthanga for allegedly centralizing power in Aizawl.

He urged the candidates to work for the development of Lunglei, the second-largest town in the state after Aizawl.

All the parties are contesting all 11 seats of which four are reserved for women.

However, no one has filed nomination papers till 3 pm on Thursday even as the last day for filing nominations is today till 3 PM.
