Clean Air Crisis Looms Over Mizoram: Alarming Deterioration Observed Despite High Forest Cover

Speaking to Northeast Live, Dr. Alfred Malsawmsanga, Scientist B at the board, highlighted that while Mizoram’s Air Quality Index (AQI) of 29 recently topped the country’s clean air charts, the state faces a growing threat to its air quality due to various factors.

Dr. Malsawmsanga stated, “We are happy to hear the news of Mizoram’s Air Quality Index of 29 topping the country in the clean air chart. Mizoram also doesn’t have many large industries, and we enjoy vast forest cover, which contributes to our good air quality. However, our studies reveal a concerning trend year by year, the quality of air in Mizoram is deteriorating. We need to take steps to address this issue.”

According to the experts’ findings, air quality in Mizoram takes a significant hit during the dry months from January to May. This decline is primarily attributed to pollutants released during traditional jhum cultivation, a slash-and-burn agricultural practice, and urban contributors such as vehicular emissions, soot. Prominent pollutants like PM 2.5 and PM 10 are identified as the major culprits.

Mizoram’s Forest Cover
Mizoram, the second least populated state in India, spans a geographical area of 21,081 sq. km and is endowed with one of the largest forest covers in the country. As per the Forest Survey of India (FSI) 2017 report, 88.48% of the state’s total area comprises forest and tree cover, which includes:

Very Dense Forest: 131 sq. km.
Moderately Dense Forest: 5,861 sq. km.
Open Forest: 12,194 sq. km.
Tree Cover: 467 sq. km.

This expansive greenery plays a critical role in maintaining Mizoram’s clean air. Despite this, the state’s air quality is gradually declining due to human activities.

Rising Number of Vehicles Add Pressure
Mizoram’s growing number of registered vehicles, totaling 1,12,621, is another contributor to air pollution. The breakdown includes:

Two-wheelers: 5,395
Light Motor Vehicles (LMVs): 6,248
Taxis: 3,004
Heavy Goods Vehicles: 7,654

Vehicular emissions, coupled with road dust, have significantly increased pollutant levels, especially in urban areas like Aizawl.

Experts warn that proactive steps are essential to prevent further degradation of Mizoram’s air quality. Improved monitoring systems, stricter regulations on vehicular emissions, and sustainable agricultural practices are among the solutions suggested.

While Mizoram currently enjoys recognition for its clean air, the rising levels of pollutants are a growing threat that needs urgent attention to safeguard public health and preserve the state’s pristine environment.
