The state government will give its views on the proposed Citizenship (Amendment) Bill after the publication of the final NRC list on June 30.
Making the government stand clear on the issue today, Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal yet again reiterated that his government will not take any decision that will go against the interest of the people of the state.
Sonowal reiterated that the Centre is taking the NRC update process very seriously and sought coordination from the people of Assam for successful completion of the entire process.
The Assam CM, who has drawn much flak of late on the Citizenship Bill issue, assured that any decision on the matter will be made after taking the people of the state into confidence.
In a bid to calm nerves in the state that has been on the verge of boil over the proposed Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, Sonowal said his government was duty bound to protect the interest of the people of the state and it would fulfill this responsibility at any cost.
He added that he will soon meet members of the agitating groups over the Citizenship Bill issue.
