Gangmei said that the genuineness of the demands will be decided by competent authorities including Centre & the National ST Commission.

Manipur Hills Area Committee (HAC) chairperson Dipu Gangmei today said that the HAC is not opposed to the demand of the Scheduled Tribe Demand Committee of Manipur (STDCM) seeking ST status for the Meiteis.

Speaking to our Churachandpur correspondent MK Henry, the Hill Area Committee chairperson said that in democracy everyone has the right to demand whatever is constitutional.

However, Gangmei said that the genuineness of the demands will be decided by the competent authorities including the Centre as well as the National ST Commission.

The HAC chairman also reposed on the able leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister N Biren Singh and believes that all issues will be resolved.

Besides, Dipu Gangmei also urged people not to panic and maintained that the HAC has taken note of the matter which has been raised by the ATSUM and assured of discussing it in the proper forum.

“One should not be communal or sentimental on this issue. The inclusion of the particular community in the ST category will be decided on merits and not on the emotional or communal lines,” said Dipu Gangmei.
