Meghalaya Govt, NEEPCO sign key MoUs

Is Meghalaya facing power crisis? State govt signs MoUs for 2 power projects with NEEPCO. State able to produce only 359 MW.

The Meghalaya government and North Eastern Electric Power Corporation Limited or NEEPCO have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the much anticipated Wah Umiam Stage I Hydro Electric project and Wah Umiam Stage II hydro electric project.

The Wah Umiam Stage 1 Hydro Electric Project will generate 50 Mega watt of power, while the Wah Umiam Stage 2 Hydro electric project will generate 100 Mega watt of electricity.

Meghalaya Power Minister Prestone Ttnsong said that successive governments have been facing the challenge of power deficit.

Tynsons informed that at present, the government is yet to achieve the target requirement of over 650 Mega watt, and can only generate 359 Mega watt of power.

The Meghalaya Power minister said that the signing of agreement is very important and the moment the project is completed the State will be able to avail the benefit of free power of 12 percent and 1 percent local -13 in total.

He said that the State has a potential of 3000 mega watt hydro potential but are unable to tap much. According to him more agreements will be signed in the near future.
