Arunachal: Belongings of missing mountaineers found

First Published: 17th October, 2022 20:41 IST

Family members of Arunachal Mountaineer Tapi Mra have sought for suspension of East Kameng district Deputy Commissioner.

Family members of Arunachal Mountaineer Tapi Mra have made some sensational allegations against the East Kameng DC, blaming him for the failure of search and rescue operations in locating the missing mountaineer.

Addressing a press conference in Itanagar, Tapi Mra’s sister Yatok Mra alleged that despite repeated requests and appeals, the East Kameng DC refused to allow mountaineer Tagit Sorang, a family friend and close associate of Tapi Mra, to join the first phase of rescue operations, which had to be called off mid way due to inclement weather.

The family had then met Chief Minister Pema Khandu on September 23 and sought his help for a fresh search operation.

After search operations resumed, the team led by Tagit Sorang today recovered equipments like GPS, Mobile phone, tents, boots besides personal belongings of Tapi Mra and Niku Dao, at a location some distance away from Camp 2. The team also spotted footsteps belonging to the two missing mountaineers at the same location.

The family is now alleging that had mountaineer Tagit Sorang been included in the search operations right from the start, Tapi Mra may even have been rescued alive.

As such, the family members have now appealed to the Arunachal governement to suspend the East Kameng DC with immediate effect.

It needs to be mentioned here that mountaineers Tapi Mra and Niku Dao were reported missing in mid-August after they had embarked on scaling Mount Kyarisatam, the state’s highest mountain peak located at an altitude of 6,890 metres.
