Guwahati: 5 arrested in ATM fraud case

Five people have been arrested by Assam Police in connection with two ATM fraud cases and recovered 68 ATM cards. Police have also seized Rs 15,000 in cash, three vehicles

Five people have been arrested by Assam Police in connection with two ATM fraud cases and recovered 68 ATM cards.

Police have also seized Rs 15,000 in cash, three vehicles and 6 mobile phones from them.

The arrested persons have been identified as Jiaul Hoque, Lutfur Rahman, Aminul, Hanifur and Shahidul.

The arrested individuals, according to the police, had fraudulently changed the ATM cards of unknown people to withdraw money.

Two cases of ATM fraud were registered on October 4 and 5.

Following a thorough investigation of the cases, five persons have been arrested by Guwahati City Police.

Two victims Rajib Das and Devendra Kalita filed complaints and stated that some people had changed their ATM cards while pretending to be able to assist them when they went to withdraw cash from an ATM. When they returned home, they learnt that Rs. 68,000 had been withdrawn from one account and Rs. 1.10 lakh had been withdrawn from another account, said Sudhakar Singh, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), Guwahati City Police.

Police identified a car and arrested the driver after checking CCTV footage of the ATMs.

Police detained a second suspect after checking the details of which account the money was transferred from.

They named other people during interrogation, and following which the police last night arrested three more people, said DCP Sudhakar Singh.
