All Manipur Students’ Union along with the people of Manipur today observed the 57th Hunger Marchers’ Day remembering the ‘hunger marchers’ of 1965.
The Day is observed every year on August 27 in memory of the brave patriots who laid down their lives for the common cause of Manipur land.
The commemoration began with paying of floral tributes to the ‘hunger marchers’ at the memorial site at Pishum in Imphal West.
Thereafter, thousands of students took out a rally till Dhanamanjuri University campus.
It may be mentioned that the rally signifies as a reminder to the government to control price rise and make essential commodities available to the people at affordable costs.
Speaking in the occasion, AMSU President Haobijam Chalamba drew the attention of the government to check the sky rocketing price of food items and essential commodities and to properly regulate the prices to ease the hardships faced by the common people.
Moreover, the AMSU President appealed to the government not to invite another Hunger Marchers’ Day. He also urged the government to take necessary steps for increasing food production, make fertilisers available to the farmers and ensure self-sustenance.
