Amid the growing demand for upgrading Shamator sub-division into a full-fledged district, Nagaland Deputy Chief Minister Y Patton talking to Northeast Live said that the government has decided to set up a third party that will mediate the issue with Civil Society Organisations of Yimkhiung, besides other tribes inhabiting Shamator. Patton said that the person who will take up the role of an active facilitator will be named soon. Patton informed after the first cabinet meet of the new year today held at newly created Chumukedima district.
After the decision the civil society organisations of Yimkhiung have reportedly called off the agitation to push for the creation of a new district.
The agitation of the Yimkhiung Tribal Council had entered its 5th day on January 8th.
Thousands of protestors hit the streets demanding to upgrade the Shamator sub-division in Nagaland to a full-fledged district. Clad in traditional attire, the protestors were seen holding placards and marching by raising slogans in support of their demands.
A programme was also held at Pungro, Shamator and Chessore where all the speakers reiterated their demand for creation of Shamator district. Besides, the agitators made a fervent appeal to fulfill the aspirations of Yimkhiungs to live under one unified district and sent out a strong message to include all such areas in Shamator district.
There are several restrictions including an indefinite shutdown of Likimro Hydro Electric Project since 4th January are already in place as part of the agitation. Morever, the Tribal Council has shut down government offices and Business Establishments at Pungro Town under Kiphire district, Shamator Town and Chessore Town under Tuensang district of Nagaland while the entry of visitors at Mt. Saramati, Fakim Wildlife Sanctuary, Stone Caves at Mimi and Salomi remained prohibited.
