ENNG slams NSCN-IM ‘threat’ to TCL MLAs

First Published: 28th September, 2021 15:21 IST

Days after the NSCN-IM asked TCL MLAs to withdraw support to Arunachal Chief Minister Pema Khandu and Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein, now the Eastern Naga National Government or ENNG

Days after the NSCN-IM asked TCL MLAs to withdraw support to Arunachal Chief Minister Pema Khandu and Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein, now the Eastern Naga National Government or ENNG has strongly condemned the outfit’s diktat.

The ENNG in its statement expressed its resentment over the NSCN (IM) move to threaten the local MLAs and ministers against the interest of TCL people with regard to the deletion of the word ‘Naga’, from the union parliament bill passed in August 2021. The bill had recognized Tangsa, Wancho, Nocte, Tutsa and Ollo in the scheduled tribe list in Tirap, Changlang and Longding districts of Arunachal Pradesh.

The ENNG also highlighted that the recognition of the tribes’ names came following constant demand for many years by the people of the TCL region. It wrote that people of TCL belong to Naga tribe, and that the Tangsa, Wancho, Nocte, Tutsa and Ollo are sub-tribes under Naga tribe.

Terming the NSCN-IM letter as an extremely wrong move, the ENNG said the outfit was trying to mislead the people of the TCL community, thereby imposing undue pressure on TCL MLAs.

The ENNG also asked the public leaders, village chiefs, gaon burahs and panchayat members of the region not to attend the meeting called by the NSCN-IM, stating that the meeting’s agenda is unknown. Further, the ENNG added that the NSCN-IM must rather initiate peaceful negotiations with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, as the final decision could only be taken by him.

The NSCN-IM previously issued a sensational statement dated September 20, dictating the legislators of Tirap, Changlang and Longding districts to withdraw their support to Chief Minister Pema Khandu and Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein.

In the statement, the NSCN-IM has accused Khandu and Chowna Mein of acting against the Naga people’s interests.

Further, the outfit mentioned that the MLAs who fail to uphold the right of the Nagas in Arunachal Pradesh” would be considered quote unquote “Anti-Naga.”
