Tension runs high in Manipur’s Kangpokpi district after an Assam Rifles personnel allegedly shot dead a civilian of Chalwa village on Saturday.

As per reports, the AR personnel identified as Major Alok, dressed in civilian clothing entered Chalwa village last night along with 3-4 other personnel’s and and opened fire at an unarmed villager.

The victim succumbed to his injuries within a few hours, during which he narrated the ordeal and identified his assailant. The reason behind the firing is still unknown.

The deceased have been identified as Mangboilal Lhouvum, a daily-wage laborer hailing from the village.

Meanwhile, the accused has been handed over to the Kangpokpi District police station.

Angered by the incident, irate locals got into a tussle with Assam Rifles personnels demanding to hand over the Major to the police.

Chalwa village is located in the interior part of Kangpokpi district along Imphal Tamei road.
