An IIT-Guwahati professor on Saturday appeared before the National Investigation Agency (NIA) as part of investigations into the large-scale violence during anti-CAA protests in Guwahati last year.

According to reports, the IIT-Guwahati professor identified as Arupjyoti Saikia was in contact with those who were patronizing the perpetrators.

Saikia is a professor of History in the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences at IIT-G, North Guwahati.

Earlier on December 17, Assam Finance Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma had indicated in a press conference that a person working in a central government organisation played the role of a handler, as he asked the offenders to set off fire inside the Janata Bhawan.

Without naming anybody, Dr. Sarma had stated that there was electronic evidence that a leading academician from Assam was trying to orchestrate the burning of Assam Secretariat at Dispur capital complex.
