“Will Challenge the Waqf Amendment Act 2025 in Supreme Court”: Manipur NPP MLA Sheikh Noorul Hassan

On Sunday, thousands of protestors took to the streets across Manipur’s valley districts to express their opposition to the Act.
Manipur NPP MLA Sheikh Noorul Hassan has come out strongly against the Waqf Amendment Act 2025, declaring that he will challenge it in the Supreme Court of India.
In a video message, Noorul Hassan said, “The Waqf Amendment Act 2025 violates the rights of minority Muslims in India and deeply affects my Pangal community. I firmly reject this Act and will soon challenge it in the Supreme Court.”
MLA Hussain’s stance comes in the backdrop of Manipur BJP Minority Morcha Akser Ali’s house being torched on Sunday night.
The newly passed legislation has triggered widespread anger among Muslim communities in the state, particularly the Meitei Pangals, who fear that the amendments will strip them of their religious and property rights protected under the Waqf Act.
On Sunday, thousands of protestors took to the streets across Manipur’s valley districts to express their opposition to the Act. Protests were reported from Sorah, Mayang Imphal, Kshtri Awang Leikai, and Lilong in Thoubal district. The largest demonstration was witnessed in Lilong, where hundreds of men marched in unity from Lilong Bazar to Lilong Haoreibi College, chanting slogans and demanding the rollback of the amendment.
The protests took a violent turn later that night when an enraged mob set fire to the residence of Manipur BJP Minority Morcha President Asker Ali. The incident occurred shortly after Ali publicly expressed his support for the controversial Waqf Amendment Act. Facing backlash, Ali later issued a public apology, retracting his earlier remarks in an effort to ease tensions.
MLA Sheikh Noorul Hassan has emerged as a key voice in the resistance against the Waqf Amendment Act in Manipur.
