Angry mob burnt the residence of Manipur BJP Minority Morcha President Asker Ali for supporting the Waqf law

Hours after his house was burnt to ashes, son of Asker Ali Makakmayum, president of the Manipur BJP Minority Morcha, said the attack was personal and not related to the controversial Waqf Bill that became an Act on April 5 after President Droupadi Murmu gave her assent to the law amid protests across the country.

“We had gone for a wedding and had just returned home when the mob began throwing stones at our house. Even though we apologized, our house was attacked. The crowd came on purpose to loot and arson. They didn’t even spare the Quran. Burn the house but at least take the Quran out,” the visibly hurt and shaken up son said.

Tension flared in Manipur’s Thoubal district on Sunday after Makakmayum’s house located in Lilong Haoreibi Sambrukhong, was set on fire by an angry mob.

Makakmayum had earlier supported the Waqf law. Soon after the bill was passed on April 5, Ali in a Facebook post urged citizens to avoid politicising the issue and expressed his support for the legislation.

“WAKF Amendment Bill da Politics Touganu. Welcome Bill, We Support WAB,”. Meaning “Do not do politics on Waqf Amendment Bill. We welcome Bill. We support WAB,” his post read.

However, following the violent backlash, Ali issued a video apology on Facebook. He expressed regret for his earlier remarks and appealed to the central government to repeal the law.

Hours later his house was set ablaze.

The Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025, aims to reform the management and oversight of Waqf properties across the country, updating the Waqf Act of 1995. The law is facing stiff opposition across the country.
