The National Green Tribunal has imposed a fine of whopping Rs 100 crore on Meghalaya Government for failing to control illegal mining of coal.

As per reports, the amount has to be recovered from mine owners and errant officials. The amount has to be deposited to the Central Pollution Control Board for restoring the environment.

Rampant illegal coal mining has continued in Meghalaya despite an NGT ban put in place back in 2014.

The fallout of this illegal mining has been the recent tragedy in an illegal mine in East Jaintia Hills where 15 labourers are trapped for 23 days now.
