Meghalaya Dy CM Criticizes Congress for Withdrawing Support from NPP-Led KHADC Executive Committee

Sniawbhalang Dhar stated, “From the NPP we welcome all the parties to work together."

The political atmosphere in Meghalaya is intensifying as the District Council polls approach in early 2025. Deputy Chief Minister and National People’s Party (NPP) leader Sniawbhalang Dhar strongly criticized the Congress for withdrawing its support from the NPP-led Executive Committee in the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council just months before the elections. Dhar termed the Congress’ move as politically motivated, questioning its timing and underlying intentions.

Dhar rejected claims that the NPP’s position in the Khasi-Jaintia Hills region was weakening. He explained that the presence of multiple political parties, including the United Democratic Party, Voice of the People Party, and Congress, often leads to a divided vote share but does not diminish the NPP’s strength.
Dhar assured that the party is well-prepared for the upcoming elections in both the Khasi Hills and Jaintia Hills district councils.

Sniawbhalang Dhar stated, “From the NPP we welcome all the parties to work together. And maybe before Christmas or January first week, the full candidate list will be announced.”

He added, “We are fully prepared for the MDC election to be held on 21st February.”

The elections are scheduled for February 21, 2025, with counting set for February 24. Dhar revealed that about 80% of NPP candidates have already been finalized, with the remaining names expected to be announced by Christmas or early January.

The Congress’ withdrawal of support from the NPP-led Executive Committee marks the end of its association with the council, which began in June 2023 after the collapse of the UDP-led EC. Although expected, the timing of the decision has drawn significant criticism for its proximity to the elections.
