5 More Killed Due to Rains and Landslides in Meghalaya’s Garo Hills, Death Toll Rises to 15

On Saturday at least 7 people lost their lives due to a devastating landslide in Meghalaya's South Garo Hills.

The Garo Hills region of Meghalaya has been severely affected by incessant rainfall over the past 3-4 days, resulting in tragic landslides and flooding. The latest incidents have led to the deaths of 5 more individuals, raising the total death toll to 15.

In the first incident, a teacher and his son were washed away while trying to get to Tura from South Garo Hills when their vehicle met a strong current which dragged them into the nearby Bugai River.

The incident took place on the evening of October 4.

Teacher Bijoy S Sangma (44) and his 13-year-old son Weanchigado R Marak of Rongkon songgital,Tura were coming from Nagrajora, Sempara in a Wagon R towards Tura. However after crossing the Bugai RCC bridge and reaching Sonagre village on NH 217, the strong current carried away the car into the nearby deep water body.

The car has been retrieved today with the WGH police confirming that the bodies of the father and son were recovered.

In the second incident, a car travelling towards Rongjeng in East Garo Hills from Dalu in West Garo Hills was crushed after a tree in the Songsak Reserve fell on the vehicle on Saturday evening.

The driver of the vehicle was killed on the spot while 4 other occupants of the car received severe injuries. One minor, who was in the car, is said to have suffered head injuries. All 4 were rushed to a hospital where they are undergoing treatment.

In the third incident, due to continued rains in Rongjeng in East Garo Hills a mother–daughter lost their live after buried in a landslide on Saturday evening. The bodies of the two were recovered this morning. The incident took place in the village of Gongdop under Rongjeng C&RD Block.

On Saturday at least 7 people lost their lives due to a devastating landslide in Meghalaya’s South Garo Hills.

The tragic incident took place at the Atisia Songmong village under Gasupara Police station.

On October 4, 3 persons lost their lives due to landslides in West Garo Hills district.
