Governor Om Prakash Mathur held talks with 'Pipons' and 'Dzumsa' members in Mangan, discussing road repairs and tourism revival after floods devastated the region. He assured support for Lachen's concerns

Sikkim Governor Om Prakash Mathur met with ‘Pipons’ and ‘Dzumsa’ members of Mangan district on September 24 at the Dzumsa Hall in Lachen to address issues related to road connectivity and the revival of tourism in the region.

The district, which has been facing challenges following last year’s South Lonak Lake Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) and subsequent heavy rains in June this year, saw its tourism activities suspended after severe damage to the road network.

During the meeting, the governor praised the residents of Mangan for constructing a temporary bridge to restore connectivity and commended their resilience in the face of natural disasters. He assured the community that he would raise their concerns with the central government, specifically highlighting Lachen’s distress and its inclusion in the Bharatmala project, a national initiative to enhance road infrastructure.

Governor Mathur emphasized the importance of speeding up infrastructure repairs and urged local communities to cooperate with the district administration and the Army to expedite construction efforts.

Mangan District Collector Anant Jain also outlined the difficulties caused by road closures in Lachen and their impact on tourism, noting that discussions are underway to resume tourism activities as soon as possible.

It’s worth noting that the ‘Pipon’ is an elected headman in a traditional self-governing system, while the ‘Dzumsa’ is a village council that governs the communities of Lachen and Lachung in North Sikkim.

On September 23, District Collector Jain had held a separate meeting with ‘Pipons’ and ‘Dzumsa’ members in Lachen to discuss the restoration of road infrastructure and the reopening of tourism activities under the Bharatmala project.
