In a big move that would transform the look of Sikkim and further boost tourism, the DoNER Ministry has approved the conversion of the iconic Singshore Suspension Bridge in Dentam into a swanky glass-deck skywalk.

The bridge has now been officially handed over to the Tourism and Civil Aviation Department from the Roads and Bridges Department for technical testing.

The project, overseen by the Tourism and Civil Aviation Department, Government of Sikkim, aims to transform the bridge into a major tourist attraction.

In a letter, the District Magistrate of Gyalshing District, the Chief Engineer of the Tourism and Civil Aviation Department, Government of Sikkim, confirmed that the existing bridge, previously managed by the Roads and Bridges Department, has been officially transferred for technical testing and subsequent conversion work.

As a result, the bridge will be temporarily closed to vehicular traffic from September 21 to September 26, 2024. However, an alternate diversion route is available for all types of vehicles during this period.

The conversion of the Singshore Bridge, which is the second highest suspension bridges in Asia, into a glass skywalk, is expected to significantly boost tourism in the region, offering an exhilarating experience to visitors with panoramic views of the surrounding landscapes.

Last year, senior officials from the Sikkim state tourism department confirmed that “The 15th Finance Commission has already approved a generous allocation of Rs 52 crore for the much-anticipated facelift. Once the project receives confirmation from the Prime Minister’s Development Initiative for the North East Region (PM Jiwain), the bridge will undergo remodeling and reconstruction to become a glass skywalk.
