The 78th Independence Day celebrations in Northeast India saw vibrant events, with state leaders hoisting the national flag, highlighting progress, and pledging development. Here are the key highlights from Assam, Mizoram, Manipur, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Tripura, Meghalaya, and Sikkim.

Assam

In Assam, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma hoisted the tricolour at Khanapara, Guwahati, and reviewed the Guard of Honour. CM Sarma emphasized Assam’s growth trajectory and reiterated the government’s commitment to pro-people policies and the Sankalp for a ‘New Assam’. He called for citizens to join the state’s progress towards a “Viksit Assam” and stressed the need to address demographic changes and eradicate child marriage by 2026.

Mizoram

Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma hoisted the national flag at the Assam Rifles parade ground in Aizawl. In his address, he expressed deep gratitude to freedom fighters and reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to inclusive governance, transparency, and people-centric policies. He emphasized that “Mizoram first” remains the guiding principle in his government’s policies. He reiterated the government’s commitment to providing a people-centric administration with improved public service delivery.

Manipur

Manipur’s Independence Day celebration saw Chief Minister N Biren Singh unfurl the tricolour in Imphal. CM Singh highlighted ongoing efforts to restore peace in the state, with district-wise initiatives underway. A notable highlight was the inauguration of Northeast India’s tallest flagpole at the Indian National Army’s headquarters in Moirang, Bishnupur district. The 165-foot pole symbolizes the historic legacy of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose and the INA.

Arunachal Pradesh

In Arunachal Pradesh, Chief Minister Pema Khandu celebrated Independence Day at Indira Gandhi Park, Itanagar. CM Khandu called for citizens’ support in building a “Viksit Arunachal” by 2047. He emphasized the government’s commitment to the One District, One Product (ODOP) initiative, which aims to boost local economies and generate employment across all districts.

Nagaland

Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio addressed the Independence Day event at the Secretariat Plaza in Kohima, which featured vibrant parades and cultural performances. CM Rio reiterated his government’s commitment to all-round development, particularly in the eastern region of the state. He also maintained an open-door policy to address concerns raised by the Eastern Nagaland People’s Organisation (ENPO) and expressed optimism about the Naga peace talks.

Tripura

In Tripura, Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha hoisted the national flag at the Assam Rifles ground in Agartala. CM Saha paid tribute to freedom fighters and outlined the state’s achievements across various sectors. He called on citizens to work together towards Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of ‘Viksit Bharat’ and ‘Ek Tripura, Shrestha Tripura.’

Meghalaya

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma led the Independence Day celebrations in Shillong, where he hoisted the national flag and reviewed a grand parade. CM Sangma announced several prestigious awards, including the Police Medal for Meritorious Service and Fire Service Medals. The event was marked by cultural performances and a display of patriotic spirit.

Sikkim

In Sikkim, the 78th Independence Day celebration took place at Jautar Stadium, Soreng, with Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang-Golay as the chief guest. CM Tamang emphasized unity, democracy, and collective progress in his address while urging citizens to uphold peace and contribute to the nation’s continued development. In his message, CM Tamang acknowledged the sacrifices of the freedom fighters whose relentless efforts paved the way for India’s sovereignty. He encouraged citizens to uphold the values of democracy, peace, and development, urging everyone to contribute to the nation’s continued growth and prosperity
