Four more Taj Hotels will come up in Assam taking the total number of Taj hotels in the state of Assam to six

In a move that would give a big boost to the tourism and hospitality industries in the state, Indian Hotels Company Limited (IHCL) and Amalgamated Plantations Private Limited (APPL), subsidiaries of the Tata Group of Companies, today signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Assam Tourism Development Corporation (ATDC) to set up a Taj Resort and Spa (5-star luxury hotel) with an investment of Rs 120 crore in Hatikhuli tea garden in Kaziranga.

The MoU was signed in the presence of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Tata Group Chairperson N Chandreshekharan in Guwahati. Assam Tourism Minister Jayanta Malla Barua, Puneet Chhatwal, CEO, IHCL, Sukhjeet Singh Malhotra, CEO, APPL and Padmapani Bora, Secretary, Assam Tourism Department were also present.

This would be the first 5-star Taj property in Assam. The Indian Hotels which is the company that operates and handles the hotels of the Tata Group under the brand name Taj, is already operating the Ginger Hotel and the Vivanta Hotel in Guwahati.

Besides the property that will come up in Hatikhuli and the two hotels in Guwahati, Indian Hotels plans to bring in three more Taj properties into Assam including a Taj Gateway hotel somewhere between Guwahati and Jagiroad.

The Vivanta Hotel in Guwahati will be upgraded to a Taj Hotel, N Chandrashekharan said at the

Under the MoU, APPL in collaboration with Indian Hotels will establish hotel and hospitality infrastructure with modern facilities at Kaziranga. ATDC on behalf of Government of Assam will be acting as a nodal agency to implement the project.

Speaking on the occasion, Chief Minister Sarma said, “Once fully operational the project will provide direct employment to at least 200 people. Kaziranga National Park has been registering record tourist flow numbers but because of lack of high-end hotels and resorts people stay just for a day or two in Kaziranga, therefore the spending too is less. But Taj’s hospitality will not just boost tourism but also bolster Assam’s economy and growth”.

He further said, “Tata Group has no need or reason to invest in Assam. They have come to Assam with the sole intention of helping Assam’s economy grow.”

Tata Group Chairman Chandrasekaran said, “The landscape of the state is mesmerizing and has got all elements and huge potential to become world class tourist destination. This potential is getting a significant momentum under the leadership of Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma”.
