Chief Minister Conrad Sangma mentioned that around 275 new sports facilities are under construction across the state
In a significant boost to sporting infrastructure in Meghalaya, Chief Minister Conrad Sangma today announced that the government is investing nearly Rs 1,000 crore in developing this sector.
Speaking to the media on the sidelines of the Durand Cup, Sangma mentioned that around 275 new sports facilities are under construction across the state and expressed satisfaction with the quality of the construction work.
“In the past few years, the Meghalaya government has been focusing a lot on sports and sports infrastructure. When we started our tenure, we had roughly 15 different structures. As of now, we have around 275 new structures under construction or in progress in different parts of the state,” Chief Minister Sangma said.
“If we account for all the ongoing construction, it is almost close to a Rs 1,000 crore infrastructure project,” the Chief Minister added.
Chief Minister Sangma further highlighted initiatives to promote football, including Mission Football 2, aimed at encouraging the football culture in Meghalaya.
“We are officially going to launch Football Mission 2 in Meghalaya soon,” Chief Minister Sangma said, adding that the state has around 100 grassroots football centres, which are functioning under the Grassroots Football Mission Programme.
“We plan to expand it much more aggressively in the future,” Chief Minister Sangma added.
Besides this, the Chief Minister also announced the introduction of a Local Football Club Support Scheme, where clubs participating in I-League 2 and above can apply for grants of up to ₹3 crore, and grassroots and intermediate clubs in the state can apply for grants of up to Rs 15 lakh.
