A major tragedy was averted in Manipur’s Imphal East district yesterday after a joint team of the Indian Army and State Police detected and defused as many as 8 Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) during an operation.
The IEDs were recovered from Moirangpurel and Itham villages of Imphal East. These areas are largely being used by the farmers and cattle grazers.
Acting on specific information about hidden IEDs, the Army column swiftly responded and dispatched a team of the bomb disposal squad in the Siachang Itham area of Imphal East. The bomb squad neutralized the IEDs, weighing approximately 33Kgs and averted major incidents that were placed to target security forces and other commuters, said a defence statement.
“The recovery has given a severe blow to the nefarious design of inimical elements planning to undertake subversive activities in the region,” the statement said.
Earlier, on July 17, the Indian Army and Manipur Police recovered a huge cache of arms and ammunition from Chanung during a joint operation conducted in Imphal East district.
The recovered arms and ammunition includes– 13 long-range Range Mortars, 4 Burmese Iron Rod, an Improvised Explosive Device, one Modified Grenade Launcher, one G3 Rifle, and six 303 Rifles, one .22 Pistol, a Grenade, 25 locally made IEDs, 115 rounds of ammunition of various weapons, three magazines of multiple weapons, two Radio Sets and other war-like stores.
