Taxi drivers are also compulsorily required to display a copy of the notified taxi fare for the information of the public.

Much to the relief of tourists and local commuters, the Sikkim government has made it mandatory for all taxi drivers in the state to provide a QR code to accept UPI payments through Google Pay, Paytm, PhonePe, etc from passengers by July 15, 2024.

Taxi drivers are also compulsorily required to display a copy of the notified taxi fare for the information of the public.

The decision was taken to streamline payment processes, reduce disputes, and ensure smoother traffic flow.

The state government in a notification said that it has received several public complaints about the difficulty of providing accurate taxi fare due to the non-availability of correct change with either the driver or the passenger resulting in arguments, excess payments, and traffic jams.

In response to these complaints, the State Transport Department officials today held a meeting with stakeholders and local taxi associations.

During the meeting, it was decided that all drivers must compulsorily provide the QR code by July 15, 2024, as an additional payment option.

The QR code should be affixed to the front windshield on the passenger side facing the passenger and one at the rear seat of the vehicle.

QR codes can be obtained through the following methods:

  1. By downloading the QR code from Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm, etc.
  2. By contacting the concerned bank where the driver/owner has a bank account.
