LS Polls 2024: Outer Manipur to vote on – Apr 19 and 26, Inner Manipur to vote on Apr 19

15 Assembly constituencies under Outer Manipur parliamentary seat will vote on April 19 and the remaining 13 Assembly segments will vote on April 26

Due to the special situation in Manipur post the violence that had rocked the state since May 2023, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has made special arrangements and split the voting for the Outer Manipur parliamentary seat between April 19 and April 26.

Polling for 15 Outer Manipur Assembly constituencies – Heirok, Wangjing Tentha, Khangabok, Wabgai, Kakching, Hiyanglam, Sugnoo, Chandel (ST), Saikul (ST), Kangpokpi, Saitu (ST), Henglep (ST), Churachandpur (ST), Saikot (ST), and Singhat (ST), will be held on April 19.

The remaining 13 Assembly constituencies – Jiribam, Tengnoupal (ST), Phungyar (ST), Ukhrul (ST), Chingai (ST), Karong (ST), Mao (ST), Tadubi (ST), Tamei (ST), Tamenglong (ST), Nungba (ST), Tipaimukh (ST), and Thanlon (ST) will go to polls on April 26.

Voting for the 32 Assembly constituencies under Inner Manipur will be held in the first phase – April 19.

Candidates for the Inner Manipur seat are BJP’s Thounaojam Basanta Kr Singh, the Law and Education minister in the Biren Singh government. He is sitting MLA of Nambol and son of former Union Minister Thounaojam Chaoba Singh.

Manipur Peoples Party (MPP) has fielded popular actor and social activist-turned politician, RK Somendro popularly known as Kaiku for the Inner Manipur seat.

Congress has fielded Prof Agomcha Bimol Akoijam. He teaches at the Centre for the Study of Social Systems in JNU’s School of Social Sciences. Earlier, he taught at Delhi University, and the think-tank Centre for the Study of Developing Societies. He made a documentary film, Lang-Goi Challabee (Paradise Under Siege) in 2004, and his first feature film Karigee Kirunee Nungsiradee (Why Be Afraid, If You Love) in 2014.

The Revolutionary Party of India (Athawale) has fielded party’s national general secretary, 33 years old Maheswar Thounaojam.

In the Outer Manipur seat the candidates are former Ukhrul MLA, Alfred K Arthur of the Congress, K Timothy Zimik of the NPF. A retired Indian Revenue Service officer, Zimik served as Principal Chief Commissioner of Income Tax, Department of Revenue, Ministry of Finance. He is supported by the BJP.

The are two Independent candidates – Alyson Abonmei and S Kho John also in the fray in the Outer Manipur seat.
