Meghalaya: Cong kickstarts campaign for Lok Sabha polls from Garo Hills

Meghalaya Congress vice president Deborah Marak exuded confidence and said that the party will put up a good show in the ensuing parliamentary elections

The Congress in Meghalaya kick started its campaigning for the Lok Sabha polls at Dalamgre in West Garo Hills.

Meghalaya Congress president and also the party candidate from the Shillong parliamentary seat Vincent H Pala, working President Deborah Marak and Congress candidate from Tura Parliamentary seat Saleng A Sangma were present.

Speaking to Northeast Live on the sidelines of the campaign trail, Meghalaya Congress vice president Deborah Marak exuded confidence about the party putting up a good show in the ensuing parliamentary elections.

Marak believes that her party has good prospects in both the seats.

In terms of the Tura seat, the Congress leader said, “Yes we have a very good chance this time, that is why our candidate and the entire Congress party is working very very hard. Party works are in full swing, we are working very hard to ensure that our candidate Saleng A Sangma wins this time.”

Asked about her response on many seeing that the Congress has a bleak future and ‘no presence’ in Northeast, Deborah Marak said, “In politics there is always ups and downs, there is always a chance to revive and I hope we will be able to revive our party.”

In 1977, Late PA Sangma was elected to the 6th Lok Sabha from Tura constituency in Meghalaya and represented the same constituency multiple times, from 1977 to 1988, 1991 to 2008, 2014 to 2016. The breaks in 1988 and 2008 were caused by his return to Meghalaya state politics.

Just a short term from 1989 to 1991 Sanford Marak from Congress won from this seat.
